Haha congrats Mrs. M.
The conversation is beginning. They are talking about the significance and the similarities between endorsements in the book and in real life.
Also, someone brought up a point about why Jesus is still significant in the story when the bible is no longer around.

Ben just made a point about how since the government banned the bible but still kept the image of Jesus that they really had the power to manipulate the image of Jesus to be pretty much whatever they wanted.

mmoritz said...

Don't you think that is common in today's society. Really, how many people are reading the bible? Some would say they believe, but they don't read the text.

mmoritz said...

I also think that in today's society people manipulate Jesus, or the idea of Jesus.

That is definitely a good point. The conversation has shifted back to the topic of love. I found it very interesting Mildred's response to Montag's questions he asks her. Her answer is just vague enough that it could be interpreted in either way.

Jack, I don't have my book at home--I left it for Mrs. Summers. Could you be a little more specific.

Now they are talking backwards and thinking under what circumstances could Montag and Mildred have been at one time compatible to be spouses. I think that the government saw at one time they were both similar in their very simple nature but now that Montag has discovered that he can challenge the system the relationship is starting to fall apart.

mmoritz said...

Yes...that and Mildred is totally consumed with television and her seashells. How could you possibly maintain a relationship with someone like that?

JackW said...

Oh sorry. I was talking about when Montag confronts Mildred and asks her if the people on her TV actually love her and she actually loves them. She answers by saying "Thats a silly question" but she never specifies if she means its a silly question because of course they have a mutual love or its a silly question because she really doesnt know.

Do you think that in our society today, relationships suffer because people are so "plugged in" to so many other things?

JackW said...

Some modern relationships definitely suffer because people are "plugged in" to other things. Society has inadvertently created things that can provide people with something that may distract them and eventually totally detach themselves from their spouse. But there are always people who will be "addicted" to things like their job and still find time to be with their family. A good example of this is my dad who leaves for work usually even before i get up and comes home in the late afternoon. Despite working about 10 hours a day he still finds time to help me with homework and stuff like that.

mmoritz said...

Your dad sounds like a good man. What is the inner circle talking about?

JackW said...

They are talking about how Montag was talking to Mildred and Mildred asks why she or anyone should read. Montag lists some very valid reasons but as in many scenes when they are talking whatever Montag says goes in one ear and out the other.

Sadly.

It is very sad. But i think there might be hope for Mildred because at first when Montag is talking to Clarrise, his reaction to what she is says is similar to how Mildred usually reacts when Montag tries to talk to her.

mmoritz said...

Do you really think there is hope for Mildred? She seems pretty far gone to me.

mmoritz said...

Jack--Thanks for your help today. I really appreciate it. Have a great rest of the day.

I bet if we would have looked at montag at the beginning of the book we might have seen that he was pretty far off too. But he realized how silly the way of living was. Maybe Montag will be to Mildred what Clarrise was to Montag.
But class is almost over so...have a good day :D
